Stroud & District Mencap Society
Stroud and District Homes Foundation are extremely fortunate to work closely with another local charity Stroud and District Mencap Society who own all the properties that our Service Users live in.
As Stroud Mencap aims are to enhance the lives of Adults with Learning Disabilities this means that the service users and tenants of both companies benefit from the association, both organisations are keen to ensure that the environment and the high standard of the homes is maintained and improved and problems are resolved at the earliest opportunity by our onsite Maintenance team.
This makes us unique as the feedback we have been given is that this is often not the experience that many tenants have in adult social care.
History of Stroud Mencap Society
The Charity began with an enthusiastic and committed group who organised fundraising events attended by the former MP Anthony Kershaw as well as annual fairs in the Subscription Rooms.
The Charity developed further when in 1970 a small group of committed and visionary Trustees and their friends had a desire to create nurturing homes for adults with learning disabilities where they could be supported by caring professionals to reach their individual potential in life. They each placed a five pound note on a table with the absolute intention of searching for a suitable property. This came to fruition when Barn Lodge opened its doors in 1982 as Stroud and District Mencap Homes Foundation providing six residents with a vibrant, happy home, bustling with all the activities that any family enjoys.
In 2013 the requirements from local government and the Care Quality Commission led to the need to have a clear separation between landlord and care provider and so Stroud Mencap Society became the landlord of the properties and Stroud and District Mencap Homes Foundation became Stroud and District Homes Foundation Ltd (SDHFL) and became responsible for the care provision.
Stroud Mencap Society continues to partner with SDHFL and together they have actively sought to provide more homes and have gone on to purchase or build six further homes in Stroud, Stonehouse and Leonard Stanley which provide supported living services for 39 individuals. The most recent home Sadlers opened in January 2020.
The charity is seeking to recruit new Trustees to strengthen its Governing Board, we are seeking individuals who have the willingness to contribute and support the charity in its duties as landlords as well as continuing our fundraising tradition to fulfil our charitable objectives and enhance the lives of disabled individuals in the area.
We are also keen to encourage new members to join and support us in fulfilling our charitable objectives.
